Time, Life & Lifestyle

What is the Meaning of TIME ?
Just like the same Q. What is the meaning of LIFE?, there are many definitions, but one simple view could be:
"Time is like Water". ... Let me explain...

While washing dishes or watering plants, many of us leave the tap water running. Afterall "water is free" isnt it!? Enter the 90s, and bottled water is sold sometimes for even more than a coke. Maybe its a good thing. Countries like Australia often have terrible water shortages and so impose penalties for people wasting water via sprinklers and washing cars (no the government doesnt have a peep-cam inside your home to see if you left your tap water running while washing dishes... yet). If only we treated our TIME like this. Penalties for wastage.

In chapter 4 in the book, I talk about "time-thieves", just like "bank robbers" exist. And your "time-bank-account", just like your $$ bank account.

Here's a brief passage from chapter 4:
"... so which is more important to you? Time or money?
Let me ask you this: How much money is left in your bank account? OK, so it's a sensitive question. And you know you can earn more money to fill up your bank account next month anyway, right?
So then, how many time tokens do you have left in your account?
Yes, how many left today? How many left this year? How many left if you lived another 30 years? ...."

So what's this got to do with lifestyle you ask?
Well, we all know we only have X number of years left in our LIFE on earth. How many ?
Glad you asked. I've just added an instant AGE calculator on this blog to show you How many DAYS you have "already" lived on earth !
A question to ask ourselves may be How many DAYS or MONTHS "more" may I live on earth ?

What a WAKE UP CALL to living the lifestyle you "really" want!
... before you die. We all will.
Even if you're living a great lifestyle, and you're happy with it, I'm sure you are striving to live an even better lifestyle, enjoy more EXPERIENCES, and you have even more dreams and goals ahead.
Afterall, the world changes quickly, so the day we stop striving to improve, we begin to die. There's always that something else we want to do...but then...TIME runs out!

So how many DAYS have you lived on earth today ? How many left ? What are you going to do with those days or months ?
ENJOY the journey !

Reader Favorite Parts

I thought it a nice idea to share reader's feedback re. favorite parts of the book with all of you, so I welcome you all to email me your favorite parts from the book that YOU found useful. Just the page numbers with first/last words are fine. Look fwd!

From Michael:
So many parts were really useful and I'm applying some now, but pages 53-55, although simple calculations, I never thought of it this way before. Thanks!:

Here's a snippet:
"a) 8 min/day saved will give you 3 days/year! (48hrs/yr awake hrs).
b) 18 min/day saved will give you 7 days/year! (110hrs/yr awake hrs).
......
1) Email vs. Call - a 2 min email vs. a 10 min call,makes you those 8min
2) Calling vs. Meeting - a 20 min call vs. a 60 min meeting, makes you 40min/day, which will give you a whopping 15 days/year ! (243 hrs/yr awake hours)." There's your BONUS "2" week holiday on the beach !

From Carol:
Entire chapter 4 on Time was a wakeup call, especially pages 37, 44, 50. Page 37 got me thinking!:

"Imagine, just imagine you were forced to spend one dollar every hour of every day. Imagining?
You can spend it on anything you like. You can spend it on something to eat, somewhere to go, or just give it away, anything - but only one dollar each hour - no more , no less. But you have to keep spending. Does it sound crazy? Impossible ? OK, I'll make it easier. Try imagining this: Someone had access to your bank account, and they were taking out one dollar every hour, every day, for the rest of your life. If you lived for another 66 years, that would be just over $578,160, or over half a million dollars.

Yes, your time is stored in your "time bank account", just like your money is stored in your bank account. But with different rules. The rule of the game is that you can only spend your time!"

From Dave:
I couldn't put the book down from the moment I started, but if I had to choose one part, page 20 made me really think about my lifestyle as I never thought of it this way before.:

"OK, so let's work out just how many hours you are working now.
If you're on the normal 9-5 workweek, then you're doing 40hrs a week x 50, allowing for two weeks holiday, so 2000 hours a year.

Let's say you spend two hours a day on stuff you really love. This leaves you with a 6x5x4 lifestyle. (6hrs a day x 5 days a week x 4 weeks a month) = 1440hrs a year (assuming you have a four-week holiday each year).

If however, you;re on the 3x3x3 lifestyle, you're working 360 hours a year.
There's a slight difference isn't there. Aha, I hear you say, "But I can't afford not to work, I need the money!". Sure you do! I do too. I also have to live my lifestyle somehow. The question is: "How much do you need?"
Or, as I mentioned before, the most important question to ask yourself is: "What lifestyle do I want to live?" and, "How much will this cost me ... per month?"

Notice I'm not asking for a yearly amount, or even worse, an amount after you retire so to speak, but how much do you want now and each month?"

NOW Situations, NEW Solutions

Dating, eating, shopping, partying, communicating with friends, etc.
There are many facets of our lives that just don't change over generations. I call these the "NOW situations", as they will always be with us NOW.

However as times change, social customs change, life tools change, and so to solutions change. So we have "NEW solutions".

"Many" of these NEW solutions only "some" of us know about AND use in our lives, and "some" of these NEW solutions "many" of us use in our lives. I will talk about those NEW solutions that still only "some" use.
So what the hell am I on about here? Lets look at 3 examples:

1) FRIENDS:

NOW SITUATION:
Ask your grandad or grandma how they kept in touch with friends ? Now look at how you communicate with your friends. We all have different styles and use different means.

Some wait to meet, some still call landlines, many SMS from mobiles, while more recently millions stay in touch via internet SNS (Social Networking Sites) like MySpace and Facebook. Many of these we all know, but how many of us already "use" them in our lives ?

STS > SMS > SNS > SOS !

We went from STS-ing (Standard Telephone Service) in grandparent days to SMS-ing early 2000's, to SNS-ing now. So what's next ? Help ! SOS. (Special Open Service).
It has to be with us and HELP us Anywhere we go, Anytime we need, with Anyone we want.
It has to be OPEN so will mix & mesh all our key communication devices and means into ONE transparent mesh. Something like combining the power of the iPhone, Facebook, Google/Gmail, Twitter, but more.

NEW SOLUTION: Twitter ... http://twitter.com

Twitter.com is just one NEW solution on this path. It allows your friends and/or fans to "follow" you (or as I like to say, "fly" after you like a bird "twitters") Anywhere Anytime so you're not only in touch but can also reach out to help with stuff instantly Anytime Anywhere you like. Need a lift somewhere quick by a friend who's already heading that way? Need to offload a plane ticket quick to a friend who wants to fly there ? Want recommendations from friends who have been-there-done-that ? Able to help your friend in the situation s/he is in right now ? Enjoy Twitter !

2) TV:

NOW SITUATION:
Again, your grandparents used to be thrilled to watch dodgy "black&white" TV. But you and your friends are now sick of the junk on TV.

Enter Youtube, IPTV, the video iPod, mobile-TV, and a number of NEW solutions to our TV lifestyle. Most of us know these, but there are NEW solutions. Here's just one suggestion:

NEW SOLUTION: Joost TV ... http://www.joost.com

In a previous post I mentioned just some of the beauties of Joost.com. Watch what YOU want, when YOU want, where YOU want ! Not what the TV station dictates !
While you're cooking or eating dinner or while you're lying in bed, you can enjoy or learn anything you like in 3 clicks & 3 seconds !
Enjoy Joost !

3) RUNNING:

NOW SITUATION:
When I used to run as a kid, I remember being thrilled to bits finding a red watch that calculated how fast & how far I ran. (Actually it was really only an estimate though).
Many of us just use an ordinary watch, and recently listen to our iPod while running. So nothing has changed much, until ...

NEW SOLUTION: Nike+ iPod ... http://nikeplus.nike.com

You can see photos & read more in a previous post, but now "Nike+iPod" really allows you to keep track of all your running data !

A message to NIKE: It's great ! But the only functions missing are:
1) memo adding
-memos re. the weather, how you felt, what you ate, sleep, etc
2) manual changes
-coz it crashed a few times and stuffed up my running records & graphs!
3) make it easier to:
-use on the fly, start/stop, sharing with mates, changing goals, etc.

NIKE: "Just Do it !" :)

Marathon in pix

After been pressed for photos of the marathon, I've added 3 here - pre/during/post race. I'd rather spend time & space on this blog helping YOU with lifestyle tips so it's brief. (Email me for the whole story).

But as running & health are a part of our lifestyle, for my next marathon (Sept 28 in Berlin or Italy, or Nov 9 in Athens) as I failed this time, I will train properly (3 months) so I not only DO run it in 3hr 33min, but so I can help YOU with training/running tips :)

Running Lifestyle - Marathon Life Experience

As marathon training wont apply to many of you sane people I'll keep this short. But some of you may also plan to run the full marathon as one of Your Life Experiences, so here you go:

6 MONTHS > 3 WEEKS:
I've just finished my last training run today, a 2 hour run...I think the longest I've ever run. The marathon is now only 1 week away, May 11, and the usual recommended "6 month" training was squeezed into 2 weeks, as the last week of my "training" will be to relax, eat well, & sleep :) The toughest part !? (Photo above after last year's 10km race).

LIFE EXPERIENCE:
I've put my foot into this so to speak so I WILL be entering and doing the best I can for my 1st ever full marathon, 42km. But my 2nd marathon I WILL train for at least 3 months ! Then I can provide real useful tips for those of you who also plan to run the full marathon as one of Your Life Experiences as I wrote in chapter 7.

HITTING THE WALL:
From 30min runs I've increased it to 2 hours in just under 2 weeks, and I'm happy with my speed. I feel good, so fitness isn't an issue, it's just the chapping and leg/calf muscles that will cop it once I hit the 30km or 35km mark ... what they call "hitting the wall" in marathon-language, so I'm "curious" what will happen to me then :) If I continue to run the same speed as I'm doing for 2hours, I will run it in 3hr33min :) ... but I am dead certain that chaos will hit at the 35m mark and then its up to the Gods and my will power ... or stupidness perhaps :)

ONLINE TIPS:
I got a few good tips from Pat Connelly's video coaching here: www.videojug.com/tag/marathon-training
